How will i know for sure if i have necrophobia or is it just something in my head?

Question: How will i know for sure if i have necrophobia or is it just something in my head?

This really would not be a problem if i was not in school to become a paramedic. I that line of work my job is to keep them alive but I know that i will come across someone that is already dead or I just cant save. I am so afriad of dead bodies, not the death, I am not really sure why but it could be a serious issue for my future. I need to know how I could get over this as quickly as possible. I recently had a dream about being stuck the morgue, the fear that i felt is so hard to explain. If anyone has any suggestions please give them. Thanks

So go to the morgue, and find out.

Yes it is all in your head, but that what phobias are. Find out if you are first, ask for a tour of the morgue. If you are afraid of the bodies then the only way to deal with it is councelling. Without that you will have problems as you will have to deal with bodies in your job, and you cant refuse to do it!

I kind of know what you mean. I have some what of the same problem. To me it is not the fear of death or the dead it's more like to me the body is nothing but a peanut shell it carries a nut for a time but then when the nut is gone who wants a rotten old shell. ( I am really not trying to make a joke) I have been to 4 funerals in the last 9 months and I have told my self every time that " I am going to hold her hand or pat her shoulder " Then I get up to the casket and I can't do it. I don't understand why. My sister looks at a dead body as a rotting piece of flesh and there for it is carrying germs and so she will no touch a dead body either. I guess if they were still warm than it wouldn’t bother me to much but than again.... I digress you are going to have to do it. Chances are that there will be another (living) person with you so maybe they can help you through it. The only way to overcome a fear is to face it (unfortunately) I hope it helps to know that you are not the only one. I am also sure you will do fine as am EMT. Good luck and God bless

Both are in your head! Seriously, you will come across dead people in your work. YOu can't avoid it. I have been a Nurse for 20+ years. I find that if i talk to the body while I am preparing them for the morgue it makes me feel calmer and like I am just working with the person. No one LIkes the dead bodies except a necrophiliac. We just cope. And if you are in school for paramedic they should tell you that most of the disgustingly dead bodies you find will be picked up by the coroner's staff not you. Go through a morgue or funeral home with a good friend see what happens. And for the other answer posted here, most people do NOT touch the body in caskers at funerals. Best of luck
