Blood test... overcoming needle phobia?
Hi Yahoo... I have had severe needle phobia for years now and I have been working to overcome it... I have gotten very good at seeing pictures images videos of needles syringes blood and anything medically related to needles without having a panic attack which used to happen A LOT sometimes even at the mere mention of the word... and i'd pass out a lot I've had nothing but bad experiences with needles and especially blood tests untrained techs. endless sticks, not being able to find my vein, etc. most happened when I was much younger but I always ended up in tears... I really want to face my fear, and this is the last step I need to take to say I'm over it... I'm planning to get it done sometime soon as my doctor has already given me a requisition to check everything. I also know that this means they will take more vials and possibly take longer. I'm prone to fainting but I want to be strong and do this without a sedative that my doctor suggested, I don't like taking drugs... So, if anyone has any suggestions on anything that will help me maybe ease these nerves, prevent me from passing out, and making the draw go faster? My doctor suggested lying down but I really think that would be worse on my nerves so I'm just going to sit... I also know I should drink lots of water before the test as well as people say the more hydrated you are the faster it goes... I will do that but if anyone can offer any other suggestions that would be so helpful... Thanks a bunch hmmmm.... ok maybe I will try lying down then if it really does help a lot... I feel faint very easily so... thanks I also forgot to mention that my boyfriend will be coming with me as he is the one who has worked with me this whole time to get to this point, so he will be my rock < 3

How do I know if I have a needle phobia and had panic attack because of it?
Ok, the past few days when things have gotten really stressful, I've usually had a lightheaded feeling or a mild headache that was only noticeable for a few minutes, I would go from being too hot to too cold, and I would feel a little jittery. My dad thought maybe it was diabetes it runs in my family pretty strong so he decided to check my blood sugar by using that thing that pokes your finger then takes your blood. Once I heard him say he was gonna do that, I all of a sudden started breathing like REALLY fast and almost felt like I was suffocating. My hand kinda shook a little bit, and my bottom jaw started to shake as well sort of like when your cold . This lasted a minute or so. I had no control over what happened and my family thought I was just being silly. I eventually calmed down, but then when he was about ready to poke me finger so he could take my blood, I started having those panic attack like symptoms. This has never happened to me before. I have had some bad childhood experiences with getting a shot at the hospital. The doctors nurses usually had to hold me down to get a shot, which as a kid, that was pretty scary. Evan G, that's a gross answer and I don't see how that answers my question.CAN I PLEASE HAVE SERIOUS ANSWERS D

I have to opportunity to go to Japan, its my dream to go I just tried for the 3rd time in 2 days to get it done, my doctor suggested a Lancet which is supposedly painless and quick. Im not worried about the pain, but just the idea of it going into my skin I tried Valium and all other anxiety drugs, they don't work at all, i feel no change and freak out. How can I deal with my needle phobia?!?
I hate needles I have an operation tomorrow and I can't relax I feel physically sick at the idea of having needles in my hand ect.... Its not really the pain that makes me scared, Its more the idea of them sticking things in my veins. Also I had a bad experience a few years ago.... I went to have a blood test and the nurse stabbed my tendon in my arm by accident. I almost passed out... I wasnt as phobic of needles before this event and now its really bad How can I relax??? It affects me so badly thanks x

Treating needle phobia with medication- It's not working!! Anyone else have this problem?
First off, my needle phobia is not about pain. Getting a shot doesn't hurt, my problem is that I get panic attacks. I've tried some systematic desensitization and that has helped to a degree, such as when talking about needles yeah even that can trigger an attack but I really need to take medication to be able to get a shot. I need to get bloodwork done and I'm looking to have the side effects of the benzos present so that I'm not really aware of what's going on, and to be fuzzy on whats going on. I'm afraid that I'll get an attack in the middle of having blood drawn. I've tried Xanax 2mg , Valium 10mg , and Ativan 4mg and none of these drugs are giving me the desired side affects. My doctor is surprised that I wasn't loopy after taking those dosages of medications all separately, obviously. He suggested I then try 2mg of Ativan with some Benadryl and here we are an hour later and I'm wide awake.By now you may be thinking that I have a high tolerance to benzos due to abuse of them, but I HAVE NOT USED THESE DRUGS RECREATIONALLY ONLY AS PRESCRIBED ON AN AS NEED BASIS.I also think its worth mentioning that taking straight Percocet doctor prescribed does not make me loopy. When I was in the ER they gave me Percocet, Benadryl and Reglan, and THAT made me loopy. I was that level of unawareness to get bloodwork. So what the heck is wrong with me?

Cures for extreme needle phobia? And a question about borderline personality disorder?
So I was talking to a friend of mine about my fear of needles. It's not the pain. And I have no idea why I'm absolutely terrified of them. Just the sight of them scares the out of me. And I MUST LOOK. Please. No answers telling me to brave it up. Or look away. It won't work and it's a pointless answer. It's literally painful for me to look away. Like my whole body starts hurting because I must look. Also, she studies psychology and I was telling her how some times I feel ultra tiny or really huge or just empty on the inside like I'm hallow and she said that's part of borderline personality disorder. But I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder Because I see stuff and all that fun stuff But is it possible to have like.. multiple diagnoses like that?

I have needle phobia, any tips on dealing with it?

How to get over a needle phobia? [URGENT.]?
I have a major fear of needles, hospitals, having an operation they use gas to knock you out. I have a phobia of that. and blood. I feel pathetic when I realise that I'm scared of everything in that list I think I first realised my phobia when I was around 5. I have a lazy eye which I am partly blind in and so I have have been in and out of the hospital pretty much every much. Maybe for my teeth, or I have to have tests etc etc. I have had two ops on my eye at the ages 3 and 5. Then I have been in and out of the hospital because of my braces, tests, and I have recently had my appendix out Lets get to the point, I have to have my year 8 jabs Something to do with cancer, and some others that i NEED to have done. I've passed them all. I haven't have them done I've refused everytime and I am getting them done in year 9. I'm scared stiff. I know i will not go though with it. I'll try but i'll end up being sick or fainting. About a year ago when I had my appendix out i had to have a blood test. It took about 2 hours to get me to come around to having it done, and half and hour for them finally to draw blood. I had 2 nurses holding my hand while they were doing the test and another two standing by my side holding me down. It was torture After that my mum came rushing in and i passed out, i woke up crying for my dad and shaking like mad, i felt dizzy and i was sick, and my eyes were rolling back ad my breathing went fast. It was horrible. That happens when I have an operation, see blood, Go near a hospital Not as bad, I just freak out and my breathing starts to get faster and i panic I need to some how get over this phobia before I end up hurting myself and need an operation again, or before year 9. I petrified Please help, thanks alot . Sorry for the essay hehe. Even talking about it makes me feel ill

I am desperate now I have a tooth that needs to be filled and I may need a root canal. My question is basically, is there something they can do for me? Is there a pill or a way to put me out? The pain of a filling with no anethesia is too much. We tried. Or are people with serious phobias just out of luck?

I have a needle phobia and I need some help?
Well the above statement is partially true you see I just don't like needles anywhere else but my arm. So does getting dental anaesthetic feel like getting blooded taken? I've asked people what it was on 1 10 in terms of pain and most said 4 5. Would you say the same? And could you tell me what a 4 or 5 would be for you, for example for me stubbing a toe really hard would be a 2

What's a good way of getting over my needle-phobia?
The last time I had to get an injection, i was hyperventilating in the waiting room, my face was the palest I'd ever seen it and my sister, who went with me, got an impressive set of nail marks in her arm.I can't stand the sight of needles either, I can almost feel it going into my own arm when I see someone else getting an injection and it makes me feel nauseous. My boyfriend and I want to go to Cambodia next year, and my fear of needles is making me reconsider our destination. A few times, I've tried to convince him plan a trip to europe instead. My sister suggested I donated blood because there's the initial prick of the needle, but not the feeling of mounting pressure just below the skin which I hate. Would this work? What are some other things I could do to ease my nerves around needles?I don't think it's the needle part the bothers me, it's more how you can feel the fluid going into your arm and the pressure that accompanies it. And when I look at the list of side effects from that particular drug, I just know I get every one of them...and I do.

Needle phobia?!?!?!?!?!?
What is the scientific word for a needle phobia? Like when you get a shot or your blood taken and your deathly afraid? Now that you say that I remember exactly where it came from When I was about 3 or 4 this pediatrition said I was going to have my blood let by a " magic straw" she made it sound painless I never forgave her because that was about the most painful thing I think anyone has ever done to me Thanks
