Question: Urgent!!! needle phobia self medicating?
(Posted by: corruptionbunny on 2009-07-16 00:42:05)
I'm absolutely fucking terrified off syringes. i'm 18 years old and i've managed, somehow over the years, to very slightly grow out of my fear of shots, but i've avoided getting blood drawn for years. now i have to get some drawn in the next couple of days, and i'm a wreck. everyone just tells me to look away while they're doing it, or "just breathe " or some unhelpful shit like that. i need something more. i doubt the nurse will do me any special favors because it's a busy clinic, so i'm seriously considering self medicating. maybe showing up slightly trashed, stoned out of my mind, or hopped on whatever over the counter/ prescription sedatives i can get ahold of. yes i know it'll show up in my bloodwork but i don't even care. please if anyone has tried this, give me some REAL ADVICE. i won't be able to face this sober/ conscious!!! |

If you do that, they can find out by your blood and you can get into so much more trouble, and they might not be able to find out the actual problem. So get over it! Lifes too short to be a poonanny! Sorry, but it's true, there's a lot worse things to happen to you in life. Ask them to sedate you, or give you something to calm down. |

Just get over it. its in your head, you by some means, accidental or otherwise, put it there so just ignore the fear. If you just dont concentrate on it so much, it wont bother you. its all about willpower. |

DO NOT SELF MEDICATE! My worry is not that it will show up in your blood work, its that it will thin your blood. and I'm sure you can piece together what will happen if your blood thins. I'm not sure what to tell you about your fear of syringes. This is something you need to do for your health, If your health is important to you, you will understand it needs to be done. All I can give you is the cheezy tips like -Counting down from 100... -Looking away -Make conversation with the nurse -Sing a song in your head or even sing your alphabet. The idea to that is that it will take your focus to the thing and not the blood being drawn. I'm sorry I can not be of further help to you... Good Luck |

Well, I find it interesting that you can take shots but not blood drawn so maybe it isn't needle phobia you have at all. Maybe it is the length of time the needle may be in your arm. Or that it might break off while in there. So, if this helps, you should know that when they take blood nowadays, the needle is withdrawn leaving behind a tiny tube that draws the blood out. It is nothing more than a shot, then capped off leaving a tiny tube to do the work. It is nothing. Rest your fears. Do not take anything to change the results of your blood work. Think of yourself getting a shot and that is all. Because that is all it basically is. |

I was like you until I got pregnant. It's not bad at all....obviously you don't look. Just try to relax your whole body and it goes quick. |

I have had lots of blood tests, some nurses are better than others at drawing blood, you may have had bad past experience, try not to self medicate as it may show up in your blood test. |
