My needle phobia is making me consider suicide. help?

Question: My needle phobia is making me consider suicide. help?

(Posted by: Jewcika on 2009-11-26 00:39:16)

Please note I'm talking about a PHOBIA here, so please don't answer if you're going to be insensitive or if you really don't know another answer besides "look away while they do it. " I am being extremely pressured into a blood test for immigration, but I can't do it. My parents are depending on me to get this done in order to get Canadian permanent residence (which I've never wanted, this is not my home). I tried to go to the lab on Friday, but ended up violently lashing out and throwing up. I had taken three Lorazem and only felt uncoordinated but as anxious as ever. I threw up for two days afterwards, with on- and- off panic attacks until now. There's a time limit for the blood work to be done, and I'm in such a desperate situation that I just don't think anything's worth it. I feel trapped with no way out and I'm desperate. There is no support for me and I've been mocked to no end by medical staff. I don't know what to do anymore, I need advice, fast.

I understand that you are really afraid of needles. why are you so afraid of needles? do you think getting your blood drawn will kill you? I think you should ask a doctor about it and see what they have to say. Just remind yourself that you are bigger than this and that it is going to help you, not hurt you. You have serious needle phobia. try talking to a psychologist. they can really help. good luck

I've never dealt with this, but I know that feeling of phobia (I have sociophobia or used to). I think the thing to ask yourself is "Why do you fear it? What's the worse that can happen if you take it? " Suicide is always extreme, don't let your parents down. It's really lucky for someone to get Canadian immigration (my parents are too). I don't know if this will work, but I wonder if you can: a) practice a mock needle process for withdrawing blood....get as accurate similation as possible. (I haven't figured out a way how to mock it, but I think it might give you a good start). b) I guess the other thing is visualisation or watching other people get their blood drawn (personally is the best, but I'm sure you could get videos of blood withdrawing on youtube) until you are more desensitized. c) Well..If you plan on carrying out your suicide, you might as well get the blood work done. Think of it this way: Getting your bloodwork done IS suicide. You've got nothing to lose. From what you said anyway. Why not commit suicide in which it at least fulfill your parents' expectation? Let it be a gift to your parents. Go down with style! Whenever I'm uncomfortable or in a fearful situation that I know has a time limit (which, getting bloodwork done has a time limit), then I think to myself repeatedly: "It's just one uncomfortable moment. " Even if it's for a long time, keep telling yourself this. Blood drawn doesn't take more than ten minutes, I think. We can call it your 'ten minute suicide " This phobia is more mental than anything, what you have to do is lots of retraining of your mentality. Definitely talk to a psychologist if you can access one. Also, BUY A HERBAL TEA (ginseng tea, for example) to help calm the nerves. I also suggest bringing a mp3 player or a cd player if you have them in the clinic to distract you. (Upbeat music or calming music, depending on your personality; i would probably find a few or just one song about being brave or being a fighter'- eye of the tiger?.) Going through this will be hard. But I think it'll be one of your greatest acheivements (at least in my book). And just ignore mustafa....something's wrong with him / her. NOTE: Clinic people can be the nicest and most compassionate people on earth towards your condition, but this is meaningless if you don't help yourself. I EDITED MY INFO. PLEASE RE-READ.

What the,,.,why kill yourself over blood test? well, you should breathe in and breathe out, relax yourself. some poeple are really just scared of needles. look for a clinic that takes their patients seriously and sensitively. explain to your parents that your have a great deal of fear of needles. they should be able to help look for a clinic that doesnt laugh at their patients. but i think you only felt that the medical staff mocked you because you know you're scared of needles. dont feel too pressured, collect your thoughts and dont get desperate. relax and have a good night's rest. deal with it one by one and dont freak yourself out. :) goodluck.
